Lock an object so that it is not selectable

I would like the selected object to become fixed and unselectable but listed in a menu so that I have the option to unlock it from there. When trying to place small objects around a large one, for instance plants around a large rock, it is currently impossible to select it once it is within the selection border of the large object. It drives me nuts!
